Medical Surgical Nursing

The Medical Surgical Nursing program at Sree Gokulam Nursing College is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to function as competent beginning practitioners of nursing. The curriculum emphasizes the use of the nursing process to develop and implement individualized plans of care effectively. Students are educated to understand their professional responsibilities and are encouraged to embrace their roles as contributing citizens within their communities. The program focuses on recognizing and addressing the health needs of the general population, preparing students to work collaboratively with healthcare teams to meet these needs. A strong foundation in evidence-based practice and scientific knowledge is provided, ensuring that nursing care is delivered following current standards and scope of practice acts. Mission

Promote hands-on skills in advanced nursing procedures in Medical-Surgical Nursing areas. Facilitate research activities by the students and faculty in Medical medical-surgical nursing field. Update the students and faculty on the change in protocols and policies in medical-surgical Nursing. Keep abreast with the latest developments in Medical medical-surgical nursing field. Develop guidelines for the clinical conduct of both faculty and students. Ensure critical evaluation of faculty & student activities in the field of Medical-Surgical Nursing. Encourage collaborative activities with other departments in the college and clinical setting.

The vision is that the activities of the Dept. of Medical-Surgical Nursing facilitate the development of competent professionals who demonstrate excellence in the nursing practice, education,research and administration.

Goals

To equip students with the ability to appreciate patients as holistic individuals and develop specialized skills in medical-surgical nursing, we aim to provide comprehensive knowledge in all aspects of adult health care. Our goal is to foster a professional commitment to quality patient care and cultivate a work environment that promotes excellence in practice. This preparation also emphasizes the importance of measuring and enhancing the quality of care delivered, ultimately assisting patients in returning to their highest level of functioning.

Strength

Our institution boasts an advanced skill lab and fundamentals lab equipped with essential equipment and mannequins, complemented by an adequately stocked library. We have a sufficient number of teaching faculty to ensure quality education. We actively celebrate all health days with the participation of both staff and students, and we are committed to ongoing faculty development programs. Furthermore, we collaborate with prestigious institutions like RCC and SCIMST to enhance our educational and clinical training opportunities.

Add-On Course

The certificate course on ECG is designed to update the essential knowledge and skills of nursing graduates in the management of patients within its scope. This course enhances the competency of nursing graduates in ECG interpretation and equips them to apply this knowledge in practice. Offered in a hybrid format (5 hours online via MOODLE and 10 hours hands-on), it falls under the category of Medical Surgical Nursing-ECG. The course layout includes various sessions: the conducting system of the heart by Mr Arun A S, ECG leads and placements by Mrs Sarika S R, ECG paper and waveforms by Mrs Ann Benzily, normal ECG by Mrs Jayalekshmi P S, and dysrhythmias by Dr. Hebsiba P. The hands-on component involves ECG interpretation, led by Dr. Anil Roby D, a Senior Consultant Cardiologist at SGMC&RF

Future Plan

Our strategic goals include increasing publications in UGC CARE-listed journals, applying for research grants in collaboration with government agencies, and securing leadership positions in various nursing organizations. We also aim to encourage faculty to pursue higher qualifications, such as PhDs, to further enhance their academic and professional development.
