Mental Health Nursing

Mental health Nursing Department was raised in the year 2009 when the first batch of BSc Nursing students were admitted under university of Kerala. Mental health Nursing department is committed to train the students to develop an empathetic approach to all clients & families irrespective of their disease conditions. Our endeavour is to drive in the concept of therapeutic use of self among students so that they can apply it in all nursing care situations with special focus on mentally ill patients & their families.

We are committed to train the students to develop an empathetic attitude grounded on sound communication technique & therapeutic use of self to develop & practice the right approach to patients & families affected by mental illness.

Vision

Vision of mental health Nursing department is to emerge as a unit of excellence in training nursing students to practice as excellent clinicians in mental health nursing practice at par with global standards.

Goals

To equip the students with a holistic approach to patients & families ● To develop skill in empathetic attitude while dealing with patients & families ● To Apply principles of psychiatric nursing in all clinical situations ● To learn the technique of therapeutic use of self in all clinical situations.

Strength

● Faculty strength over & above the prescribed strength by Apex bodies and majority with post graduate degree in the speciality and a few PhD scholars. ● Teaching learning activities are ICT enabled ● Blended techniques ,opportunities for independent learning ● Use of problem based learning using case vignettes ● Clinical experience provided in parent hospital & Govt Mental Hospital ● Opportunities to focus on preventive psychiatry in the community ● opportunities to participate in observing important health day to create public awareness ● Adequate library facilities with latest edition books in psychology & mental health nursing ● Collaborating with schools to create awareness about drug free life & empowering adolescents & young adults with life skill training ● exposing students to tailor made programmes for overall grooming & personality development.

Add-On Course

Add on courses in soft skill training & Therapeutic communication skill (role play kit) is developed by the department.

Departmental Facilities:

Department deals with psychology for first semester BSc nursing students & 2nd year Post Basic BSc nursing students. Mental health nursing subject for 5th & 6th semester students & second year Post Basic students are dealt by departmental faculty. Department involves students in preventive mental health nursing activities by integrating the concepts in their community health field posting . Opportunities are given to the students to conduct preventive health awareness sessions to adolescents , youth, middle age group & elderly focusing on their age related mental health requirement. This is done through the nurse led clinic run by college of nursing. Mental health nursing clinical & simulated learning experiences are tailor made to tune the students to make a meaningful experience in the lives of mentally ill individuals & their families. Department is involved in training BSc Nursing students & post basic BSc nursing students in psychology & mental Health Nursing
